Introduction to Nicole
Nicole’s textile practice explores the possibilities of bobbin lace and what happens when it is combined with other textile techniques.
Bobbin lace has been part of Nicole’s creative life from an early age. Over time, working with different lace and embroidery techniques, and living in different parts of south-eastern Australia, has shaped her interest in colour, geometry and the forms and textures found in nature.
Nicole’s current practice is centred on experimentation. Nicole explore how techniques such as hand embroidery, stitching and other textile processes can be incorporated with bobbin lace to create something different from either technique on its own. Nicole is interested in what happens when the structure of lace is altered, extended or embellished through another form of making.
Each piece develops through the process of making. An initial idea, a natural form, an exhibition theme or simply a question about what might happen can become the starting point. From there, Nicole experiments with materials, techniques, colour and structure, allowing the work to change as possibilities emerge.
Nicole enjoys the balance between the precision of bobbin lace and the freedom to experiment. My work continues to evolve as I discover new ways to bring lace and other textile techniques together.
